Charles XVI Gustave of Sweden

Charles XVI Gustave (Carl Gustaf Folke Hubertus) (born the April 30th 1946) of Sweden since the September 15th 1973 is king. He is the son of the crown prince Gustav Adolf to Sweden and of the Sibylle princess of Saxony-Cobourg-Gotha. At the one year age, it loses his father.

Born with the castle from Haga, he is the grandson and successor of the king Gustave VI Adolphe of Sweden, but also the cousin of the queen Marguerite II of Denmark and of the Anne-Marie queen of Greece.

The beginning of its reign is marked by a suppression of the political powers of the King who has nothing any more but one protocolar role of representation. It is him which gives each year the official diploma to the prizes winner of the Nobel Prize at the time of a sumptuous ceremony.

Of its marriage the June 19th 1976 with Silvia Sommerlath, it had three children:

  • the princess Victoria, princess heiress and duchess of Västergötland, born the July 14th 1977
  • the prince Carl Philip, duke of Värmland, born the May 13rd 1979
  • the princess Madeleine, duchess of Hälsingland and Gästrikland, born the June 10th 1982

Prince Carl Philip was crown prince ( kronprins ) until January 1st 1980, date on which was founded the sexual equality in the royal succession.
