Charles III of Bourbon

Charles III of Bourbon , born the February 17th 1490, died with Rome in 1527, was count de Montpensier, of Clermont and dolphin of Auvergne of 1501 with 1523, then duke of Bourbon, of Auvergne, count de Forez, Walk and lord de Beaujeu of 1505 with 1521. It was also Connétable of France of 1515 with 1521. It is also named the constable of Bourbon .

It was wire of Gilbert, count de Montpensier, of Clermont and dolphin of Auvergne, and Claire de Gonzague

He married in 1505 his cousin Suzanne de Bourbon (1491 † 1521), girl and heiress of Pierre II, duke of Bourbon and Auvergne, count de Forez and of Walk and lord de Beaujeu, and of Anne of France. This marriage made of him the richest lord of the time. The husbands had:

  • Francois, count de Clermont (1517 † 1518)
  • two Twin X, born and died in 1518

With the service of king de France

In 1507, it accompanied Louis XII with Genoa, which then considered a the fourth forwarding in Italy. This one engaged in 1509 and it fought the Vénitiens with Agnadel. In 1512, the king sent it to fight Ferdinand II of Aragon which threatened the Navarre. In 1515, it defended the Burgundy against Maximilien Ier de Habsbourg, it directed an army to Marignan. François Ier conquered the Milanais then and named it constable and viceroy of the Milanese. It defended the Milanese against the Imperial ones, gained some successes, but was recalled in France in 1518.

Change of camp

In 1521, his wife died and Louise of Savoy, mother of François Ier, asserted the strongholds of the Bourbons, as grand-daughter of the duke Charles Ier de Bourbon. The lawsuit which followed gave him reason. The affronts towards the constable also multiplied. The constable engaged of the negotiations with Charles Quint, but the plot failed and the constable had to flee (1523). Its goods were confiscated and attached to the royal Domaine.

Appointed general lieutenant of the Emperor in Italy, it fought the French, gained the Bataille of Sésia where Bayard was killed. It invades then the Provence and besieged Marseilles, but an army of help obliged it to raise the seat. It beat and made captive François Ier with Pavia in 1525. Given up by the emperor, who did not want to satisfy his ambitions, it solved to create a principality in Italy, put the seat in front of Rome, but it died during the attack in 1527. The city was taken and plundered. It did not leave children.
