Charles Dupuy

Biography

Normalien and aggregate of philosophy, inspector of Academy, it was elected appointed republican in 1885 and took an active part in the discussions on the reforms of teaching. He was even Minister for the State education in 1892. Minister of Interior Department in 1892, during the first two presidencies of Alexandre Ribot, it organized the brutal repression of the disorders of the Latin Quarter with Paris and reacts in the same way vis-a-vis the working trade unions in 1893. Following the Scandal of Panama, it was charged to form the government with the fall of the Ribot cabinet, where it preserved the ministry for the Interior and the Worships and worked with the Franco-Russian Alliance.

He was president of the council when Sadi Carnot was assassinated and he was candidate with the presidential election which was followed from there. He had evil to get along with Casimir Périer which succeeded Sadi Carnot with the presidency of the Republic and which he succeeds in making resign at the end of a few months. It is also under its ministry that Dreyfus was condemned. In this business there endeavoured to remain neutral, but he could not contain the increasing agitation of the leagues: when the baron Cristiani had attacked with blows of cane the president Loubet with the racecourse of Auteuil, it was shown almost complicity because the police officers, however present of number, intervened only mollement. This incident was worth a Motion of censure to him.

It however had a reputation of courage, due to a sentence, marked whereas it was President of the Room and that a bomb launched by the anarchistic exploded, Vaillant: “ the meeting continues ”. It will become Senator of 1900 until its death in 1923. It was five times President of the Council under four different presidents of the Republic:

Sadi Carnot (April 4th with the November 23rd 1893 then May 30th with the June 25th 1894);
Jean Casimir-Perier (of July 1st, 1894 to the January 15th 1895);
Felix Faure (of November 1st 1898 with the February 18th 1899);
Emile Loubet (of February 18th to the June 12th 1899).

A college bears its name (College Charles and Adrien Dupuy), with the Puy-en-Velay.
