Charles-Andre Julien
Charles-Andre Julien (1891 - 1991) was a historian and a journalist French.
Biography
It is at the 15 years age, that Charles-Andre Julien leaves food in Algérie with his family. After having obtained its baccalaureat, he works like small secretary with the prefecture of Oran. As of its entry in the work world, it runs up against the Oranian great landowners, the colonial traffics and the dispossession of the indigenous grounds. Shocked by the treatment whose are victims the Algerian natives, it engages very early in the political action. It lines up with left and becomes acquainted with intellectuals and politicians opposed to the colonial system among which: Félicien Challaye, Andre Gide and Albin Rozet.
Socialist, it supports the Révolution Bolshevik and becomes one of the leaders of the III {{E}} Internationale for Algeria. At the time of a voyage in Russia, it meets at the time of the Congress of Moscow in 1921 revolutionary intelligentsia, Lénine, Trotsky, Gorki and Ho Chi Minh. He hopes to see the revolutionists engaging against colonialism, which is not the case because of the difficulties that the revolutionists in their country meet. But later, it decides to leave the Extreme left for the Popular front. It is by this occasion, that Leon Blum call it with Matignon and charges it with creating a new administration, the Mediterranean High committee which was to make it possible the Popular front to find solutions with the problems involved in Algeria and protectorates Morocco Ain and Tunisia N. It designs an information center for the chief of the government and writes with Pierre Viénot notes of syntheses making of the specific proposals.
After the fall of Leon Blum, he works for Albert Sarraut. After the Second world war, it is named with the Council of the French union, which enables him to work with the parliamentary library where it has in hand all work of the assembly. In 1931, it writes its first book, Histoire of North Africa ; in this book, he contradicts the theses colonialists according to which the history of the Algérie begins starting from 1830. After being itself made up a network of advisers, it manages to recruit its correspondents within the independence movements as in the clan of Bourguiba with which it binds friendship. In the years 1930, he becomes the sub-editor of the historical Revue .
Professor of university, member of the Socialist party, adviser of the French Union, it then is marginalized and supervised by the authorities. He then denounces the abuses the French policy to the the Maghreb, and is indignant at the drifts of the IV {{E}} République. It also defends the Maghrebians and carries out a counter-enquiry after the death of the Tunisian trade unionist Farhat Hached, where it shows the organization of the red Main and the residence to be at the origin of his death. At the time of the Moroccan crisis, it is made advise it of the sultan Mohammed V. After Second world war mark the bursting of revolts in the four corners of the colonial Empire French, initially in Algeria with Sétif, then in Indo-China and finally, 1947, with Madagascar. It is after the revolt of Madagascar, subdued hard, that it decides to take the journalistic route.
It takes part in the creation of the newspaper Le Monde , which enables him to gain the friendship of its founder, Hubert Beuve-Mery. April 19th 1950, it signs paper in Le Monde , where he asks France to revise his policy of protectorate in Tunisia and in particular the Traité of Bardo and Marsa which are, for him, politically exceeded. After the independence of the Morocco, it is invited by the king Mohammed V to found the Moroccan university. He is named first senior of the Faculty of Arts of Rabat, and he will assume at the same time the load of professor with the Sorbonne. After having left its university functions, it continues to work on North Africa while directing a collection of biographies. He dies in 1991.
