Geography

The commune of Chanzeaux is located at the limit between the Mauges and the country of the Layon.

The village of Chanzeaux overhangs the valley of Hyrôme on the Eastern edge of the Armorican Solid mass, between the country of Mauges - characterized by couverturess in tile and the activity of breeding - and the country of the Tailboard - located in the Paris basin and which is characterized by slate and the culture from the vine.

History

Origin of the name: the old name Cancellis is derived from bottom Latin cancellus , “barrier, end”, undoubtedly significant of the limit between the country of Mauges and that of the Tailboard.

The schist and the sandstone level in this country with the broken relief. An axe out of polished stone and toponyms inherited prehistory like Pierre White or Pierre attest the human presence during the Neolithic era. For the Gallo-Roman time, they are bricks with edges and stone coffins.

The parish appears made up as of XIIe century, perhaps by abandonment of the private vault of the primitive castle. The feudal field is detached from Chemillé to XIVe century and belongs to several families of which that of Gourreau of Épinay, mayor of Angers, which acquires it in 1769. The seigniories of Saint-Ambroise, Fruchault and Beaumont depend on this field, chatellery since XVIe century.

At the time of the Revolution, Chanzeaux, in favor of the military Vendée, is the theater of bloody combat in which disappears more of the third of the population. After the passage of the “infernal columns” conduits by Crouzat on January 25th, 1794, the village and the castle are burnt. Only three houses are completely saved of which, curiously, the presbytery. The population falls at that time from 1795 inhabitants (in 1794) to 724 (in 1806), then it goes up until the middle of the XIXe century before currently returning around a thousand of inhabitants, including less than 300 in the borough itself.

The commune extends since the upstream from Hyrôme to the borders from Chemillé, capital of the breeding and the medicinal plants, to the edges of the Tailboard in the middle of the covered slopes of vines. A sociological study, Chanzeaux, village of Anjou , diffused in several languages in the universities of the whole world, were carried out by Laurence Wylie, professor with Harvard, as by a group of students who accomplished many stays in the commune of 1957 to 1965.

Tourist monuments and places

  • the church and its bell-tower

The church remains a witness of the disturbed period of the War of the Vendée during which the village lost the half of its population during the battles and massacres perpetrated by the Infernal Columns: the stained glasses, the mural frescos and the old bell-tower of the 12th century (Historic building) make memory of these tragic hours.

The stained glass of the Communion of Fruchaud Located above the principal gate and the platform, this stained glass is largest of the 75 stained glasses of the rebuilt church. He is same author as the other stained glasses located at the upper floor of the building - on the lower floor, the stained glasses of the transepts go back to 1930; and those of the bottom of the nave, 1955. This large canopy commemorates the last episode marking of the wars of the Vendée with Chanzeaux. It is about the First Communion of 500 children, surrounded by their families, in a small valley isolated and wild from the smallholding of Fruchaud in 1799. The worship was at that time again prohibited by the Directory under penalty of deportation in Cayenne for the contravening priests.

The close presbytery shelters also rare mural frescos of 18th century (ISMH) ordered about 1760 by the Abbot Blondel de Rye.
