Chalcogene

The family of the chalcogenes is trained by column 16 (in the past VIA) of the periodic Tableau of the elements. She includes/understands the Oxygène (O), the Soufre (S), the Sélénium (), the Tellure (Te), the Polonium (Po) radioactive and an element of synthesis the Ununhexium (Uuh). As in columns 13,14,15 and 17, the metal character of the elements increases and the electronegativity decreases. Te and Po are regarded as Métalloïde S.

The chalcogenes have a electronic structure of valence of the type NS ² np4 or NS ² (n-1) d10 np4, therefore they have a strong tendency to collect 2 electrons or to form two covalent bonds to acquire a saturated layer, in order to respect the Règle of the byte. Example the ions O2- and S2- and the molecules H2O and H2S.
