Geography

It is a village located at the extreme south of the High-Vienna. The village developed on a rocky outcrop above the throats of the Isle.

History

A tradition wants that Roger, Viscount of Limoges, founded into 801 a first monastery in this place and that this one was destroyed by the Norman ones at the time of their incursion in the Limousin, in 846. About the year millet, its descendants draw up on this natural shoulder a tower called in Romance language “castellare” which was transformed into Chalard.

In 1088, a priest with his two companions came to be installed on the ruins of the old monastery. Name of Geoffroy it would have been born close to the village to Noth, in the east of the Underground one. It made rather thorough studies with Tours, and then taught in Limoges. On the councils of a commercial rich person in whom it placed, Pierre Brun, it was made order priest in Périgueux about 1087. At the time of its voyage of ordination, he had noticed the forest of Courbefy which he crossed; it is on its return that it made the decision of living as a hermit. In 1100, Geoffroy built a small church dedicated to the Virgin thanks to subsidies of an archdeacon of Limoges, Pierre Bruchard, it is the bishop of Périgueux Renaud de Thiviers which devoted the building. The prelate advised with the hermit to create a community of canons obeying the rule of Augustin saint. Geoffroy died in 1125 and was buried in the abbey one close to his old oratory; a few years later, his/her large friend, Gouffier de Lastours, hero of the first crusade was buried in the chapter house.

The priory undergoes devastations at the time of the One hundred Year old war. In 1419, certain Beauchamp with the head of an armed band is cut off in the priory. An army carried out by the lords of the vicinity dislodges on April 14th, 1421 of it; but the priory is in sorry state, the nave of abbey having been completely destroyed. At the end of the XVIIe century, the last canons left the abbey which was sold like national good with the Revolution.
