Chérusques

The Chérusques (Latin Cherusci ) are a powerful Germanic nation at the time of the ancient Rome, established in the area of the Weser (between the Elba and the forest of Teutoburg). Mentioned by César and submitted to the Romans in the year 12 av. J. - C., they were raised with the call of Arminius, they destroyed three Roman legions, they took a big part in the fight against the Roman domination, took part in rising against Varus in year 9 and against Germanicus in 15 and 16 a. J. - C. They reconquered their independence before emigrating towards the Saxony. An high degree of civilization is attested by excavations. With Arminius and the battle of Teutoburg in 9 ap JC, they is at the origin of the formation of the confederation of the Francs (Chérusques, Bructères, Chattes, Marses).

They were undoubtedly absorbed thereafter by the powerful tribe of the Chattes.
