Châtillon-Coligny is a common French, located in the department of the Loiret and the area Center.
The current denomination was imposed in 1896. Previously, name of parish then commune, at least since medium of 16th century (i.e. when the Maison of Coligny was lord of the place), was Châtillon-on-Loing .
The landscape consists of timbered enough fertile plates, intersected by the valleys with Loing and its affluents. Its countryside offers territories of hunting and fishing exceptional.
In 1190, Etienne Ier de Sancerre made build the keep that one sees always today while arriving in the city. This one was used as dwelling to the lord and with his family, before contributing to the defense of the strong castle which was then built.
During the One hundred Year old war, more precisely in 1359, the city was besieged and destroyed entirely by English. The city was rebuilt in the valley, was channeled and strengthened from 1376 of beautiful walls bored of three doors and flanked of five turns which one still sees the vestiges. In 1437, Châtillon enters the House of Coligny and in 1464, Jean III of Coligny oldest son of Guillaume II, established in Châtillon on Loing and made build the large terraces. In turn, the lords of Coligny embellished the castle and strengthened it.
Gaspard 1st, Marshal of France from which three of its sons were famous: Odet, named cardinal at sixteen years, Gaspard II, lord of Châtillon and admiral de France and Francois, lord of Andelot which all the three took an active part in the wars of religion. Gaspard II which had become very influential at Charles IX, was assassinated during the night of the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre on August 24th, 1572. Its remainders were deposited definitively only in 1851 in Châtillon, in the only vestige remaining of the castle of its birth. In 1854, the last one going down from Coligny made build the current castle.
Appelée Châtillon-Coligny since 1896 the city preserves still today its seal of moyenâgeuse city.
