History

Cervia, at the time Roman was called “ Ficocle ” and was located at approximately 4 km in the west of the current city, with the limit of the salt-water marshes of the Delta of Po. On the emerged parts an immense pine forest extended, beyond the river Savio, until Ravenne. The discovery of human traces goes back to the III Av.JC century. In 709, Ficocle was entirely destroyed by the Exarchat of Théodoric Large the, and the inhabitant had to take refuge in the marshes where they probably founded a new city, which they named Cervia, because of the stags which populated the pine forest.

The legend wants that the name is due to a stag, which to escape the hunters, would have knelt in front of St.Bassano, bishop of Lodi. This legend inspired the emblem of the city (a knelt stag).

The fate of the city was always related to that of the saltworks, whose exploitation and trade would go up at the time of the Etruscan and was used as currency of exchange. To the Middle Ages, after one long period of war, the city passed under the dominations of the Malatesta, lord of Rimini, then in 1493, was sold with the République of Venice which wished to have the monopoly of salt, essential with the conservation of food.

Out the Napoleonean time, the city was, like its neighbor Césène, the property of the pontifical state until 1859. Not appreciating the climate of the marshes, the pope Innocent XII made destroy and rebuild the city at the current place. From this time there remains only the “store of salt”, it “turn St Michel” and the quadrilateral of the historical center.
