Cemetery of Saint-Denis
The cemetery of Saint-Denis , near to the station of tram éponyme, is the old communal cemetery of the city.
Opened in 1806 in the place of the old cemetery Saint-Remy cheese, this cemetery of 11,5 hectares counted more than 25000 concessions where 90.000 bodies were buried. This figure fell with less than 13.500 concessions in 2006, following the decision taken in 1973 and 1978 to allot new concessions to it more. The late ones since are buried with the Cimetière inter-commune of Joncherolles, commun run with the towns of Saint-Ouen, Epinay-sur-Seine, Villetaneuse and Pierrefitte-sur-Seine, and located 95 rue Marcel Sembat at Villetaneuse.
Among the famous characters buried in the old cemetery, one can quote the type-setter of International the Pierre Degeyter, with his sickle and his hammer engraved in the stone.
