History

Origins

The origins of the city remain rather vague. One can however go (if one judges some by the result of the archaeological excavations carried out in 1997) so far as to fix them at the first century of our era.

Medieval and modern history

The November 13rd 670, the tradition reports that the girl of the lord of Caudry Maxellende, was stabbed by Harduin d' Amerval of which it had pushed back the proposals for a marriage. Become blind, Harduin would have covered the sight at the court with a solemn Translation of the skin of its victim. Since this cure, Maxellende is the owner of Caudrésiens and the partially-sighted persons.

Lords of Caudry

Audancourt or Audencourt, commune attached to Caudry in 1964, was one of 12 peerages of the Cambrésis.

In the year 1007, Almaric, lord de Caudry, is constrained on the order of Henri of Bavaria, future Emperor of the Saint Germanic Roman Empire, to give up its rights on the county of Cambrésis, in favor of the bishop Erluin de Cambrai. Consequently, the territory of Caudry is found divided into two sections:

  • Caudry with Frenesches, Guisette, Post hole and concerning Tabeaumez Hainaut-Bourneville.

  • the Cockerel was incorporated in the Cambrésis and depended on the Cambric bishop.

If Caudry does not have the historical notoriety of its famous neighbors, Cambrai and Cateau, it nevertheless was associated with their destiny, the combat and exactions which the foreign armies perpetrated in our area. The troops of Louis XI camped in Caudry in 1477, those of Henri II in 1553, and those of Louis XIV in 1677. The April 26th 1794, the army of the Convention started even on the territory of the commune a combat so fatal that a ravine was called the riot deaths.

Blazon

The knowledge of the armorial bearings of Caudry goes back to a manuscript of the 15th century, preserved at the public library of Cambrai.

The armorial bearings, which “ carry money to three sheets of fish pond of mouths ”, are those of the seigneuriale family dating from the 14th century.

Modern history

The specialization of the city in the lace factory (19th century)

It is in catimini that Placide Gabet installed, in 1826, the first trade of tulle in Caudry and, in 1838, that Theophilus Tofflin began the manufacture of tulle imagination, thus establishing the first elements of prosperity caudrésienne. In 1913, several thousands of workmen worked on 650 trades with tulle. From 1926 inhabitants in 1804, Caudry passed to a population of 13360 in 1911 and becomes a true city where working mining cottages, houses of Master and workshops Textile S. Aujourd'hui were juxtaposed, a museum of lace, installed in an old workshop of the downtown area, recalls the history of the industry lacemaker of the 19th century to today.

First World War

During the First World War, the town hall was used as Kommandantur with the occupying army. It was damaged by glares of shells fired by a German tank the May 18th 1940.

In 1920, the municipal council decided to raise a monument with the memory of the 445 caudrésiens having sacrificed their life for the fatherland at the time of the First World War. Work of the sculptor Paul Theunissen, the War memorial the represents the grateful Humanity which receives in its left arm hairy expiring. It shows him the olive branch, symbol of Peace, that the hero conquered by the sacrifice of his life. Behind, new Humanity, under the features of an young girl, braided of a crown of flowers in homage to the hairy ones. On the side faces of the monument four low-reliefs are represented bronzes some evoking the hairy one in its trench thinking of Caudry, the evacuation in October 1918 by the street of Valencian, the delivery of the city by the 37e English division on October 10th, 1918 and the visit with the tombs. The monument was inaugurated the 1st October 1922.

Conversion of industry

If lace remains the base of local industrial fabric with 12 dentelliers who export more than 80% of a refined product, the economic advancement rests from now on on the diversification of the activities. Thus, since the beginning of the Seventies, of the sectors such as the Agroalimentary , the Cosmetic S or the Imprimerie was established on the industrial park of more than 100 Hectare S, which accommodates about thirty companies employing 1500 people.

In addition, an artisanal and commercial zone recently created contributes to the economic development of the city.

Caudry green city (a star with the label of the cities and villages flowered), alive and cultural knew to keep with the wire of the centuries its local folklore (of which a patois which is not spoken any more today).

The new structures (Standard HQE of the College Jacquard) and the restoration of the Center town contribute to modernize the city.

Demography

Inheritance and curiosities

Undergrounds

Caudry has an underground dug in chalk. It was intended to shelter the population. Remained been unaware of until in 1847, there was made available and restored by Jean-Adolphe Prioux. This underground, whose entry was located in the cemetery which surrounded the old church built on the current place, had three directions: one towards the street of peace, another towards the street Aristide Briand, the third towards the street Salengro. The part of the underground under the street of Peace comprised 14 rooms on both sides principal gallery located at 13 meters of depth over a 74 meters length. This gallery was broad of 1,40 meter and high 2,10 meters. On the wall of the one of the rooms was engraved the date 1640. The part moving towards the street Salengro, in 1847, broken down and was filled of fill. Lastly, the ascending gallery (towards the street Aristide Briand) finished with 2 meters of the bell-tower of old the church. In 1916 - 1917, subsidences on the place made it possible German to redécouvrir most of the underground which was cleared and supported. The whole was used as ammunition dump. At the time of their retirement in 1918, the German made jump the entry and a part the cavity which will preserve its mystery still a long time.

Other underground spaces exist under the city.

A plan drawn up in 1806 mentions not exploited career street of the Republic and indicates the existence of a street of the career (currently street of the general Leclerc)

Underground rooms were used in particular for the exploitation of chalk (it should be noted that a manufacturer of lime, Mr. Delpierre, had settled in Caudry towards 1850. The site was exploited until the middle of the 20th century by Mr. Gabet street of the Furnaces Lime).

With regard to Audencourt, let us leave the word to the Duthoit abbot: “One finds marl with the way of the Ream… One formerly exploited there the hardcore for the manufacture of the heat. From there, the existence of two lime kilns on both sides of the road of Audencourt with Montigny… It is said that the country would be truffle of undergrounds. It is claimed that an underground way made it possible to go from the village of Audencourt to the wood and to the castle of Clermont. ”
