History

Ramon Llull (XIIIe century) is the great writer in prose Catalan E of the Middle Ages; the first large poet in this language, Ausiàs March, (XVe century), turns the back at the time medieval and engages in the Rebirth. After this period of splendor of the Century of Catalan Gold, which culminates with Tirant lo Blanc of Joanot Martorell (published in 1490), the Catalan like literary language enters during one long period of decline (of XVIe century at 1833).

It re-appears with strength during the second third of the XIXe century (Renaixença). At that time are detached particularly Jacint Verdaguer, Àngel Guimerà and Narcís Oller, registered in the currents of the late Romantisme and the Réalisme. At the end of the XIXe century the Modernism arrives whose Joan Maragall is one of the principal figures.

During the XXe century, the Catalan literature is maintained in spite of the repression whose the Catalan language under the dictatorships of Primo de Rivera and Franco was victim.

Writers like Josep Carner, Joan Salvat-Papasseït, Carles Riba, J.V. Foix, El Salvador Espriu, Joan Oliver “Father Quarter”, Josep Maria de Sagarra, Josep Pla, Mercè Rodoreda, Llorenç Villalonga, Calders Father, Gabriel Ferrater, Josep-Sebastià Pons, Handbook of Pedrolo, Joan Brushed, Jesús Moncada, Quim Monzó or Miquel Martí I pol. some of were recognized these last decades.

Currently, under the effect of a very active linguistic policy of the self government of Catalonia (teaching as a Catalan, all the administrative writings are given as a Catalan…) the production of books as a Catalan is far from being blown and encourages each year the exit of new novels.

It should be noted that nowadays, the Catalan literature also exists in the department frnaçais the Eastern Pyrenees of language and culture Catalan women thanks to poets such as Jordi Pere Cerdà and Patrick Gifreu, and of the novelists, Joan-Daniel Bezsonoff, whom publish in Barcelona and whose work is recognized by the critic.
