The castle of Verteuil to Verteuil-on-Charente occupies a strategic site on the valley of the Charente.
In 1080, the castle of Verteuil which belongs already to the Rochefoucauld, is besieged by Bernard count of Marche.
In 1235 is noted a first seat by Vougrain II count of Angouleme.
The king Philippe VI remains in 1332 there.
By the Treated of Brétigny in 1360, it is given to English who can enter in his possession only one year later. It is taken again in 1385 by the duke of Bourbon after a seat which damages it, then it is taken and taken again and finally partly " demolished and abattu" according to the texts of the time.
In 1446, Guillaume of Rochefoucauld obtains from the king the right to rebuild a defense: a wall and two turns of defense.
It remains in Rochefoucauld until the revolution.
All the roofs are out of slates; they are with pepper plantations for the turns, with two sides for the buildings, pyramidal for the house of entry and in vault for the vault.
It is classified historic building since March 1966.
