Castle of Chamarande

The castle of Chamarande is a castle of the 17th century located at Chamarande (the Essonne).

History

A first castle would have been established in Bonnes towards 811 by Arteld, missus dominicus and brother of the biographer of Charlemagne, Eginhard. However, the excavations carried out with Chamarande establish that the place was never strengthened.

A castle is in any case built there at the 16th century probably for François Hurault, Prévôt of the merchants of Paris and personal friend of the king Henri IV, which acquires in 1563 the two seigniories constituting the current field and establishes its residence there. This castle undoubtedly corresponded to the buildings of current the Commanderie. After the death of François Hurault in 1613, the castle passes to his/her Jean son, who increases the field. But the castle suffers during the Fronde and it is in bad condition when it is sold in 1654 to Pierre Mérault, old farm of the Gabelle S, anobli by the acquisition of a load of rider and secretary of the king Louis XIV

It is him which then makes build the current castle. It was allotted tardily to François Mansart, without no document coming to corroborate this conjecture. It is more commonly allotted to Nicolas of Espine. The quadrilateral surrounded by ditches then includes/understands the home, flanked laterally by the commun runs the entry of the main courtyard is confined of two houses, that of left sheltering the Chapelle. The field “is then decorated channels, basins and fountains”. André Ours intervenes in the park, without the date and the nature of this intervention being known with certainty.

Involved in debt, Pierre Mérault sells the field in 1684 in Clair Gilbert d' Ornaison says Chamarande, first manservant of the king Louis XIV. It is for him that in 1685, of the letters patent of Louis XIV set up Bonnes in county of Chamarande.

To its death in 1737, the castle passes by heritage to his/her first cousin, Louis de Talaru, marquis de Chalmazel, Master of hotel of the queen Marie Leszczyńska. This one made there work the famous architect Pierre Telling of Ivry, which builds new dependences, beyond the local road close to the village, decorates the park of a Orangerie, of a Belvédère, an oval thicket of “play of oye” with a temple of love in its center and of cascatelle. It removes the wall of the main courtyard along the ditches and places in front of the bridge a grid of Ferronnerie framed of two Lampadaire S. It also modernizes the interior decorations of the castle.

In the years 1780, a water part is created, with in its center an island bordered of cypress bald people of Louisiana: the tradition allots it to the painter landscape designer Hubert Robert.

After the French revolution, Louis-Justin, marquis de Talaru, who recover the field under the Consulat, the fact of giving in state and makes redraw the park with English the. Mayor of Chamarande, it resides at the castle until his death, which has occurred in 1850. In 1852, the field is sold to Pierre and Rene Robineau.

The field becomes in 1857 the property of Victor Fialin, count then duke of Persigny, Minister of Interior Department of Napoleon III, and then ambassador of France with London. It creates a gallery at the ground floor of the castle, which it furnishs with luxury, builds the enclosing wall of the field, completes the transformation of the landscaped garden and to plant exotic trees. New dependences are built: a Firm , cattle shed S, a Sheep-fold, a Birdcage, a Kennels, a news Refrigerator and a Wintergarden. Close to the new grid of honor is placed a Obélisque inspired by the Songe of Poliphile , which probably refers to the loves of Henri II and Diane of Poitiers. In 1862, Persigny gives to Chamarande a festival for the birthday of the empress Eugenie.

The duke of Persigny dies in 1872. In 1876, the castle is acquired by Aristide Boucicaut, founder of the Cheap , which makes arrange a dining room huntings in the Renaissance taste. He dies the following year and its widow marries in second weddings, in 1881, Doctor Marie-Joseph-Laurent Amodru, mayor of Chamarande until in 1922 and appointed Seine-et-Oise. After 1913, the cascade is decorated copies of the statues of the rivers of the Parc of Versailles.

Of 1923 with 1951, the castle is a high place of formation of the Scoutisme in France (the training of the territorial persons in charge of the Scouts and Guides of France is always called the Cham in reference to Chamarande). In 1950, the first gathering of the choral societies In heart joy takes place with Chamarande, before becoming the Festival Choralies with Vaison-the-Roman.

In 1957, the last private owner is Auguste Mione, president of “French modern Construction”, before the repurchase of the field, in 1978, by the general advice of the the Essonne.

The field today

The park of Chamarande covers a surface of 98 hectares.

Commandery, i.e. the commun runs, shelters since 1999 the principal deposit of the Departmental records of the Essonne. A silo dug in the court of the castle, which includes/understands eight stages in basement, makes it possible to store up to 32 kilometers linear of files.

In 2001, a Center of contemporary art is installed in Chamarande at the instigation of Dominique Marchès, founder of the center of art of Vassivière. The center of art constituted a collection thanks to funds departmental. Its park of sculptures, recomposed permanently, plays with the factories of the park: the refrigerator thus shelters a sound installation of Céleste Stock-broker-Mougenot. The orangery presents monographic exposures of young artists.
