Castle of Brissac

The Château of Brissac is with Brissac-Quincé, in the department of Maine-et-Loire, to 15 km of Angers.

It was in the beginning a castle-extremely built by the counts d' Anjou in XIe century. After the defeat of the English by Philippe Auguste, this one yielded it to Guillaume Rocks.

At the 15th century, the castle was rebuilt by Pierre de Brézé, a rich person minister of Charles VII. During the reign of François Ier, of 1515 with 1547, the property was bought by Rene de Cossé, that the king named governor of the Maine and the Anjou. During the wars of religion, the castle of Brissac became in 1589 the property of the Protestant Henri de Navarre, the future king Henri IV. Seriously damaged, the fortress was very close being demolished. However, Charles of Thimble was party of Henri de Navarre who became soon king de France. In thanks, this last gave him the title of duke of Brissac, the castle and the money to rebuild it, which was made in 1611. Its architecture makes of it the castle highest of France, it counts 7 stages on the whole, and its frontage translates the baroques influences of the time. By marriage, the family of the Thimble-Brissac became also some time owner of the Château of Montreuil-Bellay which was sold thereafter.

In August 1620 an interview of conciliation took place with Brissac (in neutral ground) between Louis XIII and its mother Marie de Médicis: a temporary truce was concluded, which was not to last a long time because little of time after, the queen-mother was banished.

The descendants of the duke of Brissac preserved the castle until in 1792; at this date the castle was put at bag by the revolutionists. It remained in this state until a programme of repairing was begun in 1844 and was concluded by the descendants of the duke at the 19th century.

Nowadays, the castle is always the property of a family member. It is opened to the public for the visits and its splendid theater decorated with gildings lodges each year the festival of the Loire Valley.
