Castle of Brigueuil

castle of Brigueuil , it remains only the gate and the remainders of the keep and the bell-tower.

History

  • On this natural defensive site of which the name come from the Gallic " briga" derived in " brigolies" then Brigueuil, the baronnie is attested since the beginning of the 11th century with Aymeri IX of Rochechouart
  • Louis de Rochechouart-Brigueuil fights English and Charles V rewards some appoints it governor of the the Limousin and chamberlain.
  • Brigueuil was sold several times
  • It was taken by the huguenots in 1567 which were driven out by the Lunes count in 1574
  • In 1718 Louis Monstiers-Mérinville buys Brigueuil and this very loved family is not worried during the terror

Structure

it remains only little of elements:
  • the square keep of 11th the 41 meters high century crumbled partially at the 18th century and was arrasé by keeping only the first stage in 1825.
  • the bell-tower, also raised, was struck down in 1844
  • the gate rebirth with profiled pilasters and the scultés capitals are them also out of pink granite
