Casale Monferrato (in the Spain and French history often called Casal ) is a Italian city of approximately: 36000 inhabitants, located in the province of Alexandria, in the area of the Piedmont, in the north-Western Italy.
Geography
Casale Monferrato is at the edge of the Po in a plain with the foot of the hills of the Montferrat.
History
The bishop of
Silk, Holy Evasio, christianized the small borough of
Casal , which was called then
Casale di Sant' Evasio , and started to be quoted with the files of the chapter in the year
988.
It remained under the Alérame (Aleramici) until in 1305, having undergone an attack which put it in ruin in 1215 under the attack of the cities of Verceil, Alexandria and Milan.
After 1305, the borough becomes Capitale of Marquisat of Montferrat under the Paléologue of Byzance and, in 1474, it becomes finally common.
In 1559, the Traité of Cateau-Cambrésis transfers it to the capacity from the Gonzague (Gonzaga) from Mantoue, which get busy to strengthen it.
Throughout the 17th century, it is the object of seats and attacks on behalf of the Spanish and of the French, until the Traité of Utrecht of 1713, where it loses its role of capital while passing to the Maison of Savoy. The occupation of 1745 was the occasion of confusions in the churches and the convents.
In the artistic plan, it is subject to influences Baroque S and Frenchwomen, mixture appreciated still today. By recognition of Napoleon Bonaparte, some buildings publices (court, college, barracks) were built. Following the defeat of Novare, it resisted the Austrian troops courageously and during the Second war of Independence, it had a highly strategic role.
At the end of the 19th century, it became capital cement , because of richness of the hills bordering, and at the 20th century the companies developed in the sectors of the machines of the printing works and the industry of the cold.
