Carrier (ship)

A carrier is a Navire used to transport inter alia vehicles, charged thanks to one or more approach ramps. They are named also rho-rho , of English Roll it, Roll-Off meaning " literally; Roll inside, rolls dehors" , to make the distinction with the usual ships cargo liner where the products are charged with the vertical by cranes.

There are several types, according to whether they transport or not passengers, Conteneur S on the bridge, or of another goods.

Description

Name rho-rho refers above all to the technique of handling: one charges and discharges the parcels by making them roll since harbor slope rho-rho (when it exists) towards the mobile slope of the ship, which thus makes it possible to lead all that is travelling in the garage of the ship or of to evacuate it in the other direction. The rho-rho particulièrment is particulièrment adapted to the transport of Camion S, of Semi-remorque S, Tracteur S, Pelleteuse S, etc It is also adapted to the transport of containers or mobile cases conveyed in the garage of the ship by means of forklift trucks or of trailers slaves (more familiarly called " mafis " name of the German company which conceived them).

Lastly, one can also transform into rho-rho what usually raises of the general-purpose Cargo, i.e. various goods (paperboards, barrels, pallets, cases). Those are charged on the mafis which will thus make the voyage of port with port but are not authorized to leave the latter (the wheels with low diameter are not authorized with the road traffic), from where their name of " trailers esclaves".

The rho-rho is opposed to the technique " Lo-Lo" ( top spin one top spin off ) who resorts to the top-load, used more traditionally on the ships equipped with cranes or on the Porte-conteneurs. Certain ships combine the two techniques and are called " ConRo "

Structure

The rho-rho is arranged in garage whose various levels are accessible by means of Rampe S revolving or of vertical elevator operating system. The slope is generally located at the back and comes to lean with the Quai or the slope roro of the port for the operations of Accostage. It is folded up at the end of the operation and when the ship is on the point of installing. The Tirant of water of Ro-Ros is relatively weak what does not confer a great stability and limit to him the interoceanic use potential. This ship has a important Fardage. On the other hand it is particularly adapted to the traffic of Cabotage, on short distances (Transmanche, transméditerranée) like the connections France metropolitan-Corsican or the Maghreb, or the crossing of the Straits of Gibraltar. This type of ship is prone to the phenomenon of squat. The garage is equipped with devices allowing the saisissage and fixing with the trucks and other travelling machines. As all the modern ships the castle is rejetté with the back. It can be or not equipped with clean means of handling (cranes, cargo booms). Rates of loading and unloading remarkable are limited to a few hours what is particularly appreciable when it is known that the ship brings back when it is at sea (receipts) and that it is only one center of costs to the port.

The rho-rho is also an essential vector of the intermodality in transport since it makes it possible to embark containers (Conteneur S, mobile cases, trucks) without touching with the contents, i.e. the goods. There is thus no breaking bulk.

The unit used for the appreciation of the capacity of the roro is expressed in linear terms of meters (meter on the ground) or of " trailer cards " (equivalent tows) knowing that, contrary to the Porte-conteneurs which can stack the containers on several heights (ten), the trailer positioned in a roro cannot be stacked (guaranteed damage!)
