Cantonal and university library of Lausanne

The cantonal and university Bibliothèque of Lausanne (BCU) is an public institution with patrimonial, cultural and academic vocation. It has four complementary sites:

  • Library of Dorigny
  • Library of Right and Economic scenes (BDSE)
  • Library of Riponne
  • Library of the Cedars

Depending on the service of the cultural affairs, it is at the same time intended for the university community like with the general public of Vaud. It holds the documentary production concerning the canton of Vaud.

Chronology

  • 1537 Foundation of the Academy of Lausanne by the Berneses and supposed creation of the Library of the Academy . Placed in the City, it is reserved to the professors.

  • 1750 the students acquire the right to consult the books two hours per week.
  • 1806 the Library of the Academy becomes cantonal Bibliothèque.
  • 1825 Opening of a room of reading for the public.
  • 1898 the cantonal Library becomes cantonal Bibliothèque and academic (BCU)
  • 1938 Coming into effect of the cantonal law concerning the Registration of copyright. From now on a specimen of each work published in the canton must be given to the BCU.
  • 1966 Opening of a record library.
  • 1971 Creation by the BCU of SIBIL (System computerized for the libraries of Lausanne).
  • 1977 - 1982 Transfer to Dorigny of the university collections.
  • 1982 the Library of the Pastors (today the Library of the Cedars) is attached to the BCU.
  • 1985 Birth of RERO (French Network of the libraries) dividing a collective catalog.
  • 1990 Opening of a media library with Dorigny.
  • 1997 the BCU and RERO give up SIBIL with the profit of the American system VTLS .

  • 71 ' 200 microfiches

  • 688 funds Handwritten S
  • 136 funds of musical files
  • 3 ' 000 charts and plans

Catalogs

  • Network of Vaud : the general catalog of the BCU is integrated in the base of the Network of Vaud of libraries.

  • Pérunil (Periodic available on sites UNIL): count the electronic reviews of the BCU - which is on the other hand not indexed in the Network of Vaud.
  • Databases : produced by external documentary organizations with the BCU, they are generally used to locate articles of reviews, not indexed in the general catalog of the BCU.
  • Multimedia of Riponne: allows to seek by media and field in the collections of Riponne.
  • Handwritten and memories , old funds : these documents are listed in clean files.
