Cantonal and university library of Freiburg (Swiss)

The cantonal Library and academic (BCU) of Freiburg, founded in 1848, is composed of a central Bibliothèque and 21 decentralized libraries, located with the Université of Freiburg.

To the service of the population of the Canton of Freiburg and university community, the BCU contributes to the blooming of the intellectual and cultural life. It belongs to the Network of the libraries of Western Suisse (RERO).

The BCU has, in particular, for goal to acquire, preserve and make available:

  • of the books, the periodicals and other information supports necessary for the formation, the culture, the university education and the scientific research;

  • of the documents belonging to the cultural heritage Freibourgese such as manuscripts, printed papers form, documents audio-visual and private funds.

Moreover, the BCU ensures the application of the rules on the obligatory deposit of printed and of the recordings intended for the public (registration of copyright) and holds up to date the Freibourgese Bibliographie. It also has the role of contributing to the development of the public reading.

Chronology

  • 1848 Creation of the cantonal Library. The funds result from the libraries Collège St-Michel and different orders and removed monasteries.
  • 1852 the first director, the abbot Meinrad Meyer, draws up the first volume of the printed catalog.
  • 1889 Foundation of the University of Freiburg.
  • 1909 the library becomes officially “cantonal and university” (BCU).
  • 1910 Inauguration of the current building of the BCU (street Joseph-To plunder).
  • 1941 Inauguration of the university site of Mercy: the new buildings accommodate the libraries of seminars.
  • 1976 Extension of the BCU (which gives to the building its current architecture).
  • 1984 Beginning of the computerization of the services of the BCU and adhesion to the Network of the French libraries and tessinoises (RERO).
  • 1989 Integration of Freibourgese Médiacentre with the BCU. The first volume running of the Freibourgese Bibliographie is published (1990).
  • 1995 Installation of first Internet site of the BCU.
  • 1999 Several electronic resources are accessible on line: electronic periodicals, Freibourgese photographic funds, databases, electronic and different publications, as well as the Freibourgese Bibliography (2001).
  • 2000 Inauguration of “DOKPE”, Library of the Faculty of Science.
  • 2002 Emménagement of part of the funds of the Central BCU to the district of Beauregard.
  • 2005 Inauguration of “BP2”, Library in economy, company, data processing and sport.

Funds

The BCU preserves and places at the disposal approximately 3,5 million documents, of which:
  • 2  400  000 volumes,
  • 200  000 pounds old and invaluable,
  • 5  000 alive periodicals,
  • 2  100 handwritten (from which 180 go back to before 1500),
  • 537 incunable ,
  • 90 family funds,
  • 6  000 charts and plans,
  • 930  000 images distributed in a score of Fund S,
  • 5  200 audio-visual documents ,
  • 18  000 electronic periodicals in full text,
  • 290 databases.
