Canton of Unterwald
Unterwald (in German Unterwalden ) is a Swiss Canton consisted of both demicantons of Obwald and Nidwald.
With Uri and Schwytz, it belongs to the cantons which, in 1291, founded the Suisse.
Contrary to the two other Swiss cantons divided into two demicantons (Basle and Appenzell), forever made up Unterwald a plain legal unit. Right from the start, Obwald, Nidwald and the Abbaye of Engelberg formed distinct communities.
Located in the middle of the Swiss Confederation, bordered by the Lake of the Four Cantons, it is surrounded by the cantons of Schwytz in the North-East, of Uri in the east, Lucerne in the west and Bern in the south.
