Common crossings
The Cane crosses the communes of Saxi-Bumblebee, Rouy, Frasnay-Reugny, Tintury, Fertrève, Montigny-on-Canes and Saint-Gratien-Savigny, all located in the department of the Nievre.
Hydrology
The Cane is river rather abundant, but such an irregular, as the majority of the rivers of the east of the basin of the Loire. Its flow was observed over one 28 years period (distributed between 1968-2005), with Montigny-on-Canes, locality located at little distance from its confluence with the Aron. The catchment area of the river is there of 178 km ² (either nearly 95% of its totality which makes 190 km ²).
The interannual medium flow or module of the river with Montigny-on-Canes is of 2,06 m ³ a second.
The Cane present of the seasonal fluctuations of flow very marked, like very often in the basin ligérien, with high waters of winter carrying the average monthly flow on a level located between 3,72 and 4,49 m ³ a second, from December to February included (with an in January maximum), and low waters of summer, July to September, involving a fall of the monthly medium flow going up to 0,23 m ³ in August. But the fluctuations of flow are much more marked over moreover short periods, and according to the years.
With the low water level, the VCN3 can fall until 0,014 m ³, in the event of dry period quinquennial, that is to say 14 liters a second, which is very severe, the river being then tiny room to some thin filaments of water. Let us recall that the VCN3 is the past minimal quantity or minimal flow over three days consecutive.
As for the risings, they can be rather important taking into account the small size of the river and its catchment area, and are not less proportionally than the risings of rivers located more at the east like the Alène or the Arroux and its affluents for example. The QIX 2 and QIX 5 are worth respectively 24 and 29 m ³ a second. The QIX 10 or calculated flow of decennial rising is of 33 m ³ a second, the QIX 20 of 36 m ³ and the QIX 50 of 40 m ³ (see note).
The maximum instantaneous flow recorded with Montigny-on-Canes during this 28 years period, was of 33,9 m ³ a second on January 25th, 1995, while the value maximum day laborer was of 31,3 m ³ a second the following day, January 26th. By comparing the first of these values with the scale of the QIX of the river, it appears clearly that this rising was not even of a vicennial nature, and thus intended to reproduce regularly, approximately the every 12-15 years.
On the whole, the Cane is a rather abundant river, following the example of the whole of the rivers tributary of Aron and resulting well sprinkled heights. The Lame of water past in its catchment area is of 367 millimetres annually, which is higher than the overall average of France all confused basins, and as well sure to the average of the basin of the the Loire (244 millimetres). The specific Flow of the river (or Qsp) reached the solid figure of 11,6 liters a second and per square kilometer of basin.
