Camaguey

Camaguey is a cuban and capital city of the province of the same name.

Geography

In the middle of the vast plains (Llanuras) of the central part of Cuba, Camaguey is sprinkled by two rivers: Rio Hatibonico and Rio Tinima. The city was founded on a terrace between these two rivers.

The natural landscape most original of the surroundings of Camaguey is the “sabena camagueyana”, vast wide mamelonnées invaded undergrowth dominated by small palm trees.

History

The town of Camaguey was founded the February 2nd 1514, under the name of Santa María LED Puerto de Príncipe.

The city was initially built on the northern coast of the island of Cuba, but following repeated attacks of pirates it was moved by stages towards its current site. The name comes from cacic an Indian who named Camaguebax.

During the 17th century and 18th century, the city based its prosperity on the breeding of the bovines and a less way on the sugar activity.

Economy

Camaguey has an airport ( International airport Ignacio Agramonte , code AITA: CMW).

Personalities

Alberto Bayo was born there in 1892.
