Cagancho

Joaquín Rodríguez Ortega known as “Cagancho” , born with Seville (Spain) the February 17th 1903, dead on January 1st 1984 with Mexico City (Mexico), was a Spanish Matador.

Presentation

“Cagancho”, gipsy born in Seville in the district of Triana, of a father blacksmith, was one of the most popular matadors of years 1920 and 1930. Its beauty, its elegance in track, subjugaient the spectators who forgave him his failures. Indeed, if it were one of the largest matadors of its time hoods or Muleta in hand, with the sword, it were able of best like the worst. It estoquait volapié , slowly, by breaking up its gestures, as if it fell “deadened” on the toro. The public admired as well its style, its courage and the precision of its blows of sword as it was able to him to be delighted by a missed thrust: it could attend another! But very often, it multiplied the attempts at thrusts, missed them and let return the bull living to the Toril, the fifteen minutes assigned being exceeded.

Its failures were so famous that the journalist Santiago Ibero ironically spoke about “his humane practice to leave the alive bulls” . One day, to Madrid, it returns visit to a friend to his hotel. The receptionist is mistaken in name and teaches him that his/her friend has just died. “Cagancho”, upset, will announce to the dreadful news with his/her friend the journalist “Clarito” when suddenly the “late one” appears. And “Clarito” to exclaim: “Then, alive friends also you them leashes! ”

One owes him the sentence celebrates which distinguishes the Andalusian matadors from those which have misfortune not the being: “LED Despeñaperros para abajo, torea; para arriba, trabaja” (“With the lower part of Despeñaperros, one torée; above, one works. ”)

In Mexico, it will be more than one idol: in the street, one tore off the buttons of his jackets to him to make relics of them. It is in this country that it settles definitively after its retirement in 1964.
