Cactarium

A cactarium is a specialized Jardin presenting the collections of Cactus and more largely the plants which push in the desert areas. The plants collected are plants which in the course of their evolution adapted to climatic conditions of extreme dryness.

The adaptation in natural environment

To survive these species adapted to the desert conditions by redoubling ingeniousness.

  • to limit the water loss according to the climatic mode
- they transformed their Feuille S into spine. The chlorophyllian function being ensured by the stems

- they coated their surface of Cire to stop an excessive perspiration which would be fatal.

- they keep their sheets in wet season and lose them in dry season.

  • to draw water, generally they developed a system racinaire powerful able to draw water with great depth.

These plant species benefit from the least short period of rain to hurry to flower and produce seeds to make sure of the future generations. The ground stock seeds to the next rain.

Culture

The Culture is done under greenhouse to bring the heat which they miss in winter under colder latitudes and to very precisely control the contribution out of water which should not be excessive. Generally the plants are thus cultivated out of pot to control water more effectively.

The substrate (ground) must be adapted to the living conditions of these particular plants. It must be permeable so that water does not stagnate on the level of the roots. The cups are thus prohibited!

The water excess is a poison…
