Radio CHNC

Radio station CHNC was founded in 1933 by Doctor Charles Houde and becomes one of oldest the French-speaking radio station in North America. It is located at New Carlisle in Gaspésie and diffuse on the tape AM of Matapédia with Cloridorme on the frequencies 610 (New Carlisle) and 1150 (Gaspé). The range of the band AM makes it possible CHNC to be heard in New Brunswick, and the Iles-de-la-Madeleine.

The radio station ensured a bilingual service of the news of 1936 to 1940

In 1975, Charles Houde transfer his actions to his/her son Arthur Houde who was the owner of the station until 2006.

CHNC was in particular recognized to have accommodated between its walls some of the public personalities and the most outstanding policies of Quebec of which the former Prime Minister Rene Lévesque and one of the figureheads of the Liberal party of Quebec, the former minister for Finances Gerard D. Lévesque.

In addition, the employees of the station are at the origin of the one of the work-related conflicts longest in the field of the communications in Canada. The strike of the syndicated employees of CHNC extended over 4 years, of 1982 to 1986.

In October 2006, the employees become purchasers of the station by the means of a co-operative of employees.

Currently, the station diffuses musical programming Traditional Rock and Country and is one of the information sources of Bay of heats.

The station deposited a request with the CRTC to pass on the tape FM.

This request will be heard at the time of the audience of December 3rd.
