The international standard CEI 60757 , entitled Code of designation of colors (1983), defines a code of colors to register their value on the condensing resistances, and other components.

The third ring is used only when the Tolérance of the resistance is lower than 2%.

The value of standard resistances is usually indicated on the component in the form of rings of colors. Commonly 4 rings appear:
  1. the first is that which is placed more close to an end.
  2. the two first indicate two digits (a figure corresponding to a color).
  3. the third indicates a multiplication factor of the number formed by the two first.
  4. the last indicates the tolerance of error or precision. Indeed, like much of electronics components, because of their technique of manufacture and for economic considerations, resistances are not very precisely gauged.

  • According to the applications, one will use a series having different characteristics of precision. The possible percentages in more or less of the value of R go from 20  % with 0,05  %. The selling price of resistance is proportional to its precision.

  • the colors employed for the marking of values of the resistances, arranged by order ascending of value on the basis of zero are:

    • 0 = Black, 1 = Brown or Maroon, 2 = Red, 3 = Orange, 4 = Yellow, 5 = Green, 6 = Blue, 7 = Purple, 8 = Gray, 9 = White.
