History

The Central Argentina Railway Athletic Club is founded the December 24th 1889 by English workmen of the railroad. The first president is Colin Calder and all the activities occur in English. When the Argentina Exchange and the Company of the Railroads of Buenos Aires amalgamate, into 1903, the club changes name to become the Club Atlético Rosario Central .

The original colors of the shirt are the red and the white; later, the club wished to change for a mixture of blue and of white and finally, the shirt is divided into vertical bands of color blue and gold.

The team played in the local Championship of Rosario until in 1939, date of her adhesion to the National Championnat, at the same time as her rivals of the Newell' S Old Boys.

Rosario Central is relegated in 1942 and again in 1951, twice it found the elite the following year.

Rosario Central gained the Championship Nacional in 1971, in 1973 (first of a long list for the trainer Carlos Timoteo Griguol) then in 1980, with Ángel Tulio Zof over the bench.

For the season 1974, Central bought the attacker Mario Kempes which played Instituto Atlético Central Córdoba.

Rosario Central is relegated in 1985 but turns over again in the first division the following season and gains the Championship 1987. It is the only club of the history of Argentinian football to have gained the title the year of its promotion.

In 1995, Rosario Central gains its only international title, the Copa CONMEBOL (current Copa Sudamericana). Rosario took part in 10 Copa Libertadores, that is to say the third best Argentinian total behind Boca Juniors and River Punt.

Stage

Rosario Central plays Estadio Gigante de Arroyito, located at the crossing of Allevaneda Boulevard and Génova Avenue, in the district Lisandro of Torre (the inhabitants are the Arroyitos ), in the North-East of Rosario.

Its official capacity is of 41.654 places but 45.000 people can enter since work was carried out for the World cup 1978.

In this tournament, the Argentinian ones disputed their three meetings of the second turn to the Gigante , which allowed the local hero Mario Kempes, supported for the supporters, to become better striker of the competition.

Nickname

The players of Rosario are called the Canallas (the rabbles, insults rather nice in Argentina) because they refused to dispute a meeting of charity for the return of the Lèpre in the years 1920. Moreover, the players of Newell' S Old Boys are called the leprosos (the leprous ones), because they chose to dispute this match.
