Broadway

Broadway is one of the North-South main axes of Manhattan, the district ( Borough ) central of New York. It is the only axis which extends from the south (of Bowling Green) in the north of the island. Broadway is one of the rare streets of Manhattan which crosses the island in diagonal and thus does not respect the plane of squaring which was established in 1881. So it led to the construction of architectural curiosities like the real of the domestic iron (Flatiron Building).

Of its southern end until City Park Hall, Broadway is the historical place where are held the large popular processions to celebrate the victories and the exploits. One launches multiples confettis and paper serpentines there (from where their English name, ticker-slap parades ). The first of these parades took place in 1886 for the inauguration of the Statue of Freedom. It was about a spontaneous movement, and the tradition remained in a more institutional way. Many celebrities were entitled to their “ticker-slap parades”, of which Charles Lindbergh, Charles de Gaulle, the astronauts Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin and Michael Collins, as well as many Heads of State or of the sporting teams.

The section of Broadway located at the level of Times Square is the district of the theaters of New York. In years 1920 were played 200 parts and musical comedies per annum in the sector. It owes its world reputation with the musical comedies which hold the top of the poster to with it. This part of the street, called Great White Way , attracts each year of the million tourists of the whole world. Many actors and singers hope to occur in Broadway and regard this occasion as a crowning of their career. One wrote several stories and songs besides on this topic of the myth of Broadway.

This place is used for such point of reference that the theaters of New York (which they are or not located on the street in question) are classified Broadway, Off-Broadway or Off-Off-Broadway, according to their capacity and the quality which is recognized to them. In its northern part, the street passes close to the campus of the Université Columbia.
