Brassemer de Patagonie

The Brassemer de Patagonie ( Tachyeres patachonicus ) is the smallest member of the group of the Brassemer S, but also the only one which is able to fly on long distances.

Description

Large Duck measuring between 66 and 71 cm, its plumage is gray essentiellemnt clear except the lower part which is white. The head of the male is gray pale whereas that of the female is brown. The nozzle and the legs are yellowish.

Distribution

The Brassemer of Patagonie meets in the south of the Chile, in Argentine and in the islands Falkland.

Habitat

It niche at the edge of the rivers and of the lakes and spends the winter on the rock coasts.

Biology

This species lives in couple or families. Like all the Brassemer S, these birds are aggressifs and defend their territory vigorously. Brassemer de Patagonie flies well contrary to the other members of the group but often feels reluctant to do it; he prefers to flee while swimming and by splashing water.

Populations

The population is estimated at 11.000 to 26.000 individuals, the species is not threatened.
