Brahmapoutra
The Brahmaputra or Brahmapoutra - in Sanskrit, wire of Brahma - is a river of the Asia south, length of: 2900 kilometers, taking its source with: 5000 m of altitude, in the Himalayan chain of Kailas, with the Kubigangri glacier, close to Lhassa. It is the Dyardanes or the Œdanes of the old Greek .
It crosses the south-west of the Tibet, the China, and the North-East of the India, then joined the Gange with the central Bangladesh to form a vast delta. It is navigable on its: the last 1290 kilometers. To Tibet, where it is called Yarlung Zangbo (or Yarlung Tsangpo ), it provides an important axis of East-West transport on some: 1200 km, probably the axis of river navigation highest in the world. Then it turns to the south and enters to India by what is the deepest valley in the world (: 5000 m). In the State of Assam, it takes the name of Brahmaputra and crosses during 725 km the broad one and fertile valley of Assam. While entering to Bangladesh, where it calls Jamuna or Yamunâ (like the affluent of Gange which passes to Âgrâ), he continues in the south towards the Bay of Bengal via the delta of Gange-Brahmaputra.
In its lower course which is crowned for the Hindu , the river is largely employed for the transport of the agricultural produce.
Hydrology
The course of Brahmapoutra fluctuates enormously between the low ones and high waters. The maximum capacity, with a peak at semi June, can reach: 72460 m ³ /s, as during the floods of 1962. The medium flow of the river is of: 48160 m ³ /sec with Pandu in India. Its known minimum was measured at the time of the season dries in 1960 where it was of: 3280 m ³ /s.
Ecology of the river
More than 73% of the forest which covered originally bottom course of the river disappeared. What in remainder is destroyed to a total value of 10% per annum and, currently, only the 4% of the zone are in protected sectors. These sectors are the endemic habitats of 4 species of bird, and 126 fish species are particular with the basin of the river. The écorégion of the river in its Indian part lodges the largest population of elephants of India, the largest world population of rhinoceros unicorne of India ( Rhinoceros unicornis ), of tiger S ( Panthera tigris ), and of buffaloes of India ( Bubalus arnee ).
Brahmapoutra is also a biogeographic border for several species. Thus, the Entelle gilded ( Trachypithecus geei ), the rabbit of Assam, Caprolagus hispidus ), and the dwarf Sanglier ( Known salvanius ) is confined in the north of the river, while the Gibbon Hylobates hoolock and the Macaque with short tail ( Macaca arctoides ) are it in the south.
