History
Bourboule is a commune of approximately 2000 inhabitants located at 852 m of altitude, in a widening of the valley of the Dordogne. With the confluence of this river and one of its affluents of left, the Vendeix.Bourboule obtained the autonomous statute of commune in 1875 with the hamlets of Quaire, Fenestre, Vendeix and of Pregnoux. This date was the starting point of its extension and its prosperity, which made of it a " Big city of eaux" , that it became in some years. Before this date, it depended on the commune of Murat-le-Quaire.
The current church of Bourboule was built between 1885 and 1888 by the architect Gardin, former mayor of Bourboule. It is strongly inspired by the basilica of Orcival. It is of Romance style auvergnat.
The landscape gardener Joseph Marie (1821 - 1884) intervened with Bourboule. He is the founder of the dynasty bourbonnaise landscape designers the Treyve, to which the style landscape is close to that of the Count de Choulot which created Vésinet.
Etymology
The origin of the name of this city is vague still today. Some think of seeing there the proof of the existence of an old lake ( borbola , bourbe). This assumption is based on the name of the surrounding places like Pessy (fish), Murat (wall, stopping), Quaire (quay). But even if the Dordogne formed a marshy zone there, this assumption does not seem to be most reliable.
The assumption which appears most plausible is that the name of Bourboule would come from the Celtic name of the god of the sources Borvo . This would show the great seniority of the thermal springs, which made the fame of this city. About 1830, a timber sinking cylinder (probably a vestige of a Roman or Gallo-Roman swimming pool) was discovered at the time of excavations. In addition, in 1463, a called Jean Lacombe held an establishment of baths with Bourboule and certain Pierre Chanet took his continuation. This appears in a lease passed with Guillaume of the Tower, Seigneur of Murat-le-Quaire. (According to the Cany Guide, 1930; republished in 2006)
Administration
Demography
Economy
The city is known primarily like thermal spa.
The golden age of hydrotherapy, with Bourboule, remains the Entre-deux war, during which customers of luxury (emirs, sultans, etc) came to slacken there. The architecture of the principal artery of the city feels some.
A certain melancholy is thus come out from it, with this myth of " the golden age of the thermalisme" , praising the records of this period (red carpets to accommodate the customers) and showing the Social security to have attracted the popular classes in the thermal city, which of this fact replaced the rich person customers.
Hydrotherapy bourboulien is specialized in the treatment of the Asthme, of the problems of skin (Eczéma, Psoriasis in particular). For several years, a reconversion partial towards the treatment of the Obésité has allowed a renewal of the thermal customers.
