Bottle of Ekman

The bottle of Ekman is an instrument to collect sea water with various depths in order to analyze its temperature. It comprises an isolated cylinder in which one has several tubes with samples. One plunges the apparatus to various depths where one collects a sample in each tube by opening a trap door which is closed then hermetically.

This apparatus was used the first time in 1903 and 1904 for the great depths at the time of cruisings of oceanographical research. It appeared fragile with use because the mechanism of closing folded the tubes. He thus asked much maintenance. However, of the improvements made them reliable and they still are very much used today.
