Botoşani
Botoşani is the chief town of the Judeţ de Botoşani in Romania.
Located at the North-East of Romania, between the plain of Moldavie and the plate of Suceava, its geographical coordinates are 26º41' E and 47º44' NR for an altitude of 170 m above the level of the Black Sea.
Limited to north by the Sitna brook and its Luizoia affluent and to the east by the Dresleuca brook with its affluent, the plate of Botoşani seems suspended between two deep soft in north and steeper inclined valleys in the south. The general slope of the plate is directed north-eastern/south-eastern, in accordance with the slope of the hydrographic network.
Of 1990 with 1997, the population recorded an increase in approximately 3.000 hearts, after an important fall, and the census of March 2002 mentions 115.069 inhabitants being divided into 59.315 women (51,6%) and 55.755 men (48,4%).
The municipality covers 4 135,41 ha, including 1.910 ha in urban area.
History
Origin
The archaeological vestiges are the witnesses of a social life since the first ages of the most moved back times: a treasure made up of vases and silver moneys dating from the 4th century are preserved at the museum of the History of Moscow.Thus, the first mention of the town of Botoşani is in the Chronique of Bistriţa and refers to an incursion tatare: “ It is written in our chronicle that years 6947 (1439), on November 28th, entered the country an army tatare which plundered and burned until Botăşani ”.
Old administration
At the end of the 16th century, the authority of the city returned to a governor to the orders of the queen, who collected for it the taxes, returned justice and maintained the calm one. A municipal council functioned with dimensions of the governor. An administration well developed functioned in Botoşani after 1820, when the city was not any more the prerogative of the kings.
Economy

Famous inhabitants
- Mihai Eminescu, national poet born in Botoşani on January 15th, 1850, seventh child of the family Eminovicz, it will die out in 1889. Its works are known in the whole world.
- Nicolae Iorga (1871-1940), monumental personality of the Rumanian culture, equipped with a phenomenal memory, largest Polygraph of the Rumanian nation.
- Isidore Isou, founder of the Lettrisme.
