Bothnia

The Bothnia is a historical area of Scandinavia currently divided between the Sweden and the Finland. It is located between the Gulf of Bothnia (to which it gave its name) with the south and the Lapland in north, on both sides of the river Torne which mark the border between the two countries and correspond for its Swedish part to the old provinces historical of Västerbotten and of Norrbotten and for its Finnish part in the west of the province of Finnish Lapland. Formerly completely included in the Kingdom of Sweden, the area is divided between this last and the Russian Empire by the Traité of Fredrikshamn signed into 1809.
