Geology, geomorphology
Bolted is often described like a eroded Anticlinal, one (Boutonnière). If it is true that its relief, as that of the Artois which prolongs it, was formed under the by-effect of alpine compression, it is more exact to regard it as a reversed half-grabenThe reversed normal fault (fault of Ferques) corresponds to a collapse of Jurassic age, which was formed and functioned at the time of the opening of the Atlantic. It was taken again and was reversed by alpine compressive forces, which caused the Flambage continent of Europe. The formation of the reliefs Armorican, of the Ardennes, Rhenish, of the Eiffel, the Country of Bray, the subsidence of the the Sologne are due to this same Flambage.
In the area of Marchioness, in the middle of the Anticline, the Mesozoic cover is completely eroded, and thus the paleozoic base hercynien appears with the outcrop. It is to some extent a reappearance of the Ardennes to 200 km of the Fagnes, where they are inserted under the cover.
It is delimited by a chalky Cuesta which dominates of the interior Colline S developed in clay. The northern cuesta stops on the littoral by cliff S sharp: Cape Gray-Nose and White Cape Nose. The southern cuesta is separated from the feature of coast by Dune S. the opposite end of the buttonhole finds in opposite on the English bank of the English Channel (area of the Down hills).

Recent evolutions
The bordering cuesta is presented in the form of a particularly vigorous relief, which, thanks to the chalk affleurente, appears very clear and sometimes luminous under the sun. The pasturage maintained a close-cropped calcicole vegetation there.
The southern part of the Littoral, composed of beaches, dunes and a forester Hardelot is a gravitational zone of tourism. The cliffs of the Cape Gray-Nose and Cape Blanc-Nez, from where are visible the English coasts, are remarkable benchmarks for the area.
