Boeing 727

The Boeing 727 was, during very lontemps, the the most popular Airliner in the world. The 727 flew for the first time in 1963.

The design of the 727 was the result of a compromise between United Airlines , American Airlines , and Eastern Airlines on the configuration of the successor of the Boeing 707. United Airlines wished a four-engined plane for its flights towards airports located in altitude, particularly its Plateforme of correspondence of Stapleton International Airport. American Airlines wanted a twin-engine for reasons of effectiveness. Eastern Airlines hoped for a third engine for its flights towards the Caribbean. Finally, the three airline companies are reflected agreement on a tri-jet, and thus was born the 727.

The 727 met a great success near all the airline companies of the world thanks to its capacity to land on shorter landing strips, while serving average distances. That made it possible the airline companies to attract passengers of cities very populated but equipped with airports smaller worms of the tourist destinations internationales.
One of the characteristics which gave to the 727 its capacity to land on shorter landing strips was the particular design of its wings. Thanks to the extension of shutters and to the deployment of the trailing edges, the 727 could almost double its airfoil, which enabled him to fly with a great stability at very low speeds.

Anecdotes

  • the title of plane more sold history was charmed to the 727 at the beginning of the Années 1990 by his/her little brother, the Boeing 737. B727 production all versions: 1832.
  • the May 25th 2003, one 727 previously exploited by American Airlines was stolen with the international airport of Luanda, in Angola. The majority of the secret services estimate that the plane fell to the hands from terrorists or drug traffickers. Ben Charles Padilla, the mechanic who was on board, forever found.
  • According to the Airliner World magazine , Boeing 727, was the first jet commercial able to land with the international airport of La Paz, in Bolivia. The altitude of the aéroport  - 13  000 feet above the level of the mer  - the landing made impossible to the less recent jets.

  • D.B. Cooper, the hijacker, jumped in Parachute of the back of one 727 whereas it flew over the North-West of the United States. It had chosen the 727 specifically because the Airstair (a retractable staircase carried on the aircraft) in the tail facilitated its jump. To jump of a side door would have probably been fatal to him. To answer this event, Boeing modified the design with the Cooper Vane (external bolt with aerodynamic order) so that the Airstair cannot be dropped any more in vol.

  • Zero Gravity Corporation , a privately held company, uses a Boeing 727 modified to sell to its customers one brief moment of microphone-gravity, comparable with that of Vomit Makes NASA and Russian It-76K , which is used for the drive of the astronauts and cosmonauts.

  • At the beginning of the Years 1960, Eastern Airlines and other airline companies started to call their 727 Whisperjets ( planes with reaction-murmur ), because, they, a passenger sitting with before in claimed First class, could hear only the murmur of the engines installed with the back. This characteristic also made it possible to the passengers to low speak itself. Before the 727, to intend somebody to murmur on board a jet was not possible.

  • From time to time, of the 727 cargo liner rocks accidentally behind and is found sitted on their wings because they were discharged in an incorrect way and that the Airstair of tail had not been deployed. The three engines are installed with the tail of the plane, which weighs down the back of the unit. The operators must discharge the plane from the back forwards. To discharge the plane from the front to the back can cause its swing.

  • comparable Planes: The Russian Tupolev You-154, a commercial tri-jet resembling, is often confused with the 727. The Hawker Siddeley Trident British, a tri-jet, wings in T, was also similar; it was developed before the 727, at the end of the years 1950. The Trident is not any more in service whereas You-154 are always used.
