The term bling-bling is resulting from the jargon Hip-hop and indicates the jewels and the getup of the rappeurs, but also the ostentatious and excessive style of their lifestyle. The “bling-bling” return in force thanks to artists like Lil' Wayne, Rick Ross… According to The Urban Dictionary , this term comes from the jargon jamaïcain referring to the onomatopoeia of the cartoons.
The expression was popularized with the success of the song “Bling Bling”, a tube of 1999 of the The B.G.
The style “bling bling” was very current at the beginning of the rap, until the Nineties where it practically disappeared to leave room to a sober style. It returns in force since the beginning of the 21e century with in particular the arrival of the Crunk and the vagueness Dirty South, which exacerbates the signs of richness such as the money, the jewels, the modified cars, and the lifestyle “bling bling”. In France, the leader of this current is Dirty Gurung May. One finds among the bling-bling massive gold chains and diamonds, rings, cuts (those of Lil' John is estimated at several thousands of dollars) and of the grillz.
In France, the expression is used by criticisms of Nicolas Sarkozy, in a direction close to " New rich person ".
