Bey de Tunis

See also: Bey

The bey de Tunis is in the beginning simple a Préfet representing the Ottoman Empire with Tunis (Tunisia).

As from the 18th century, the beys resulting from the Dynastie of the Husseinites acquire an autonomy in fact, i.e. an quasi-independence, with respect to their suzerain: the sultan of Istanbul. The first representative of this dynasty is Hussein Ben Ali which founds the State husseinite in 1705.

Mode beylical, which puts an end to the episode Ibrahim Cherif which follows the dynasty mouradite, is transformed quickly into Monarchie whose bey is the sovereign.

Although its effective capacity is weakened by the French protectorate starting from 1881, it is after the independence of Tunisia, proclaimed in 1956, that the beys definitively lose their capacity which already passed in fact in the hands of the party of the Néo-Destour of Habib Bourguiba. The République is proclaimed the July 25th 1957 and abolishes thus officially the capacity beylical.
