Beslan

Beslan (in Russian Бесла́н ) is a town of Ossétie of North, federation of Russia. It is the administrative center of the area Pravoberezhny ( Правобере́жный )

History

The city founded in 1847, by emigrants coming from a little everywhere in Ossétie and was named Beslanykau (" Colony of Beslan ") in reference to a noble local, Beslan Tulatov.

Officially, the city carried to the whole beginning the Surnom of Tulatov, Tulatovo or Tulatovskoye. In 1941, it was famous Iriston ( Ossétie ). In 1950, the city was quickly industrialized, was unified in only one municipality and was re-elected in Beslan.

It is in this city where at September 3rd, 2004 a taking of hostages, financed by Chamil Bassaïev took place, which finished in a blood bath.

Geography

The population in 2002 was of 33.600 people. It is the third plus big city of Ossétie of North, behind Vladikavkaz and Mozdok.

It is with approximately 25 kilometers in the north of Vladikavkaz and its geographical coordinates are 43°12 ′ NR 44°34 ′ E.

Economy

Beslan is an important junction of the line of Railroad connecting Rostov-sur-le-Don and Bakou. It is also the starting point of a line active with Vladikavkaz.

In the Years 1940, it was an important industrial and agricultural town.
