Bernard Landry

Bernard Landry (born on March 9th, 1937 with Saint-Jacques-with-Montcalm, close to Joliette, Quebec) is a politician, a Professor and a lawyer Québécois. He was chief of the Parti Québécois and was one of the outstanding figures of this party; he was also the 28e Prime Minister for Quebec.
Biography
Graduate in Right and economy of the University of Montreal, Landry also holds a diploma in economy and finance of the Institut of political studies of Paris. In 1965, it is allowed with the Barreau of Quebec and practical the right until in 1976, year of the first electoral victory of the Parti Québécois. He usually speaks three languages: the French, the Spanish and the English. He is a former member of the Ordre of Jacques-Cartier.Its entry in the political circles starts in the Années 1960. Rene Lévesque, then Minister for the Natural resources under Jean Lesage, attracts it towards the policy in 1964. During four years, it is in turn adviser technical with the cabinet of Lévesque, assistant of the managing director of the planning of the ministry for the Natural wealths, coordinator for Quebec of the Canadian Council of the Ministers for the Natural wealths, and operations manager with the cabinet of the Minister for education.
It joint with the Left Québécois in 1968, and presents first once like candidate in the district of Joliette two years later, without success. It is presented again five years later, always without success. In 1974, he becomes member of the national executive of the Québécois Party.
For this period, Rene Lévesque encourages it to study the economy with the Institute of political studies of Paris. That will open later the way to him towards the the Council of Ministers, when he is finally elected Député of the district of Fabre. Rene Lévesque appoints it minister of state with Economic development in 1977. Its presence gives, to some extent, an economic credibility with the party lately elected.
When the Québécois Party is elected again in 1981, it finds the same ministerial wallet, then occupies those of deputy secretary to the Foreign trade, Minister for the International relations and Minister for Finance.
As of 1981, without claiming the departure of the chief, it does not hide that it wishes one day to succeed to him. There remains however faithful to Lévesque until in 1984, at the time of the crisis of the “Beau risks”. The strategy of Rene Lévesque, who consists in supporting the government progressist-conservative of Brian Mulroney to Ottawa, in the hope of constitutional changes favorable to Quebec, causes an acute crisis within the party, which leads at the beginning of Rene Lévesque.
In 1985, it tries to succeed Lévesque, without success. It takes again gallon in 1994 and becomes Deputy Prime Minister under the control surface of Jacques Parizeau, then of Lucien Bouchard.
It is in 2001 that it succeeds Lucien Bouchard as a chief of the Québécois Party and Prime Minister for Quebec following the resignation of this one. Of 2003 with 2005, it is chief of the opposition, following the victory of the Liberal party of Quebec carried out by Jean Charest. In September 2005, it takes again its post of professor at the School of management of the Université from Quebec in Montreal, and becomes researcher associated with the Chaire Raoul-Dandurand in strategic studies and diplomatic.
In November 2005, it becomes TV host of the emission Our Money with the Canal Money.
In October 2006, it is named patriotic year 2006-2007 by the Société Saint-Jean-Baptist of Montreal.
In 2006 and 2007, it intervenes regularly to defend, criticize or assist the chief pequist André Boisclair. Some suspected it, him and Jacques Parizeau, to take part in a rebellion of the old guard souverainist.
He is father of three children and grandfather of three grand-daughters. He is at present the husband of the singer Chantal Renaud.
