Geography

History

At the 5th century, a group of Alamans comes to be installed on Thalbach and to create the village of Jettingen. At the 6th century, the Francs arrive and seize the part is Germanic territory: Berentzwiller was born. The village passes quickly under the domination of évêché of Basle which would have a ground there. It would have made build a farm on this ground, then a vault for people of the farm, which would be at the origin of the parish church. The owner of Berentzwiller is a Swiss saint, rare fact in the area. The village belongs to the 11th century in the county of Ferrette which made there gift of a court colongère to the priory Benedictine of Morand Saint. The lord Hugues de Rodersdorf has there as a farm, as his/her son yields in 1290 to the Cistercian abbey of Lucelle. The two courses, Niederhof de Lucelle and Oberhof de Saint-Morand, are located at the end of the communal round of applause, far from the agglomeration, witnesses of the scattering of the habitat before the invasions Hungarian of the 10th century and the incursions bourguinnones and Swiss of the 15th century which pushed the farms to be met. To integrate into the grounds habsbourgeoises in 1324, Berentzwiller is managed by the town hall of the valley of Hundsbach, then becomes French in 1648 by the treaties of Westphalia, and forms soon part, like Altkirch, of the duchy of Mazarin. The revolution is well accommodated there; the Beck priest lends oath and adheres to the schism clergy imposed by Constituent on January 4th, 1791. The 19th century is prosperous and, in 1908, the inhabitants of the commune are among the first of the department to be profited from running water.
