BECK (ベック) is a Manga, which was adapted thereafter in Anime. Created by the Mangaka Harold Sakuishi and originally published by Kodansha in the magazine Weekly Shonen Magazine, Beck tells the history of one of Japanese teenager who begins the music (guitar) and at the same time, with friends, assemble a group of Rock.

BECK gained the price Kodansha Manga Award 2002 in the category Shōnen.

The history has as a main character a boy, Yukio Tanaka, called Koyuki. It starts at the time of its first year to the college; it is then 14 years old.

References to the rock'n'roll

The manga contains many references to the rock'n'roll and the pop culture in general. Practically all the covers of chapters are imitations of famous albums rock'n'roll, with the characters of BECK in the place of the original characters. A sequence of the manga reveals several icons of the rock'n'roll, such as Kurt Cobain, Sid Vicious, John Lennon and Freddie Mercury. The guitar of Ryusuke, Lucille, like its history, are largely inspired by the guitar of B.B. King, which bears the same name.

Harold Sakuishi recognized that the group is inspired partly by the Red Hot Chili Peppers (the Taira bass player, in particular, strongly makes think of Flea of Red Hot Chili Peppers).

One can find there references less known like The Pillows, named in animates " The Heroes" , which makes most of the original soundtrack of animates FLCL

History

Yukio, called Koyuki by his/her friends, is 14 years a a little wedged Japanese boy. Its life monotome is metamorphosed the day when it saves a dog with the strange pace. The owner of the dog (which is called Beck), Minami Ryusuke, proves to be a guitarist in an amateur rock group. The two boys become friendly, and their musical adventure starts.

The history is articulated around the formation, of the beginnings and the tribulations of their rock group, called BECK (also called Mongolian Chop Squad in the United States, the name of Beck being already taken when their first album leaves over there). It is interesting to see the evolution of the Yukio young person of his first courses of guitar to its talent revealed in end of animates. Yukio is also gifted in song. An important history is that of the relation between Koyuki and the sister of Ryusuke, Maho.

  • Yukio "Koyuki" Tanaka: central figure of the history, it is the second guitarist and second singer of the group. He will be also that which will carry BECK on its shoulders during the difficult moments.

  • Hiroshi " Saku" Sakurai: beater of BECK, it will be nearest friendly to Yukio
  • Maho Minami: sister of Minami. Its ambiguous relation with Yukio is an important part of the intrigue of the manga
  • Ken' ichi Sato: first professor of guitar of Yukio
  • Hiromi Masuota: boyfriend of Saku
  • Izumi: Friend of childhood of Koyuki.

Manga

The manga is currently composed of 30 volumes, in Europe, we are currently with the 20th volume (on November 14th, 2007 left), the publication of the first volume dates from the February 17th 2000. In France, it is published by Delcourt/Akata.

Animate

The history of animates does not take again that of the manga completely: animates corresponds to the first 12 volumes of the manga (of the beginning of the history until the shortly after the concert with Greatful Sound).
