Beautiful Thing is a Play written in 1993 by Jonathan Harvey and a telefilm produces a 1995 by Chanel Four, based on the part, realized by Hettie MacDonald with a script adapted by Harvey. History

The history occurs to Thamesmead, working suburbs of the South East of London.

Jamy (Glen Berry), a entiché teenager of its classmate and neighbor, co. (Scott Neal), must support his/her unmarried mother, Sandra (Linda Henry), occupied with her ambitious plans with an aim of opening its clean Pub, and its multiple conquests in love, the latest to date being Tony (Ben Daniels), a neo- Hippie. Sandra is in dissension with Leah (Tameka Empson), young black culottée and vulgar expelled of her school, which takes drugs and listens constantly by singing the discs of Cass Elliott of his/her mother. Although the Homosexualité of Jamie remains dissimulated, its introverted nature and its dislike for football are reasons sufficient for his/her comrades to maltreat it on any occasion.

Co., which lives with his/her brother drug trafficker and his violent father and Alcoolique in the apartment of at side, is beaten one evening by his/her brother, so much so that Sandra finds it outside and decides to let it sleep at it.

Bed lack third, co. must be satisfied to sleep head-digs with Jamie. The second night when they share the bed, after a massage (with a lotion with peppermint) and a small conversation, the boys end up sleeping side by side, and Jamie embraces co. for the first time.

The next morning, co. panics and from goes away before Jamie does not awake, then avoids it during several days. Jamy is arranged to steal a number of the magazine Gay Times, apparently starting to accept its sexuality and its attraction for co. Jamie finds finally co. with one evening proceeding in the vicinity and starts a conversation with him; they prepare to leave together. The evening finishes brutally, Sandra coming to be avenged for the commérages from Leah on an old pregnancy, the latter then spits the piece on co. and Jamie. Co. reacts violently and, of anger, rejects Jamie and flees.

Gently, co. accepts the love of Jamie and their relation develops whereas they go together in a gay bar, Gloucester. Sandra, suspectant something following a call of the principal announcing to him that Jamie was made strike and insult by his/her comrades, follows them and discovers their secrecy. The evening, after having embraced co. in a park, Jamie returns at his place and is confronted with Sandra who announces to him that it included/understood. Whereas Sadra smokes a cigarette following the confirmation of its suspicions, Leah, drunk and doped, is caught for Mama Cass. In confusion, it causes the rupture between Sandra and Tony and awakes the vicinity, co. and Jamie comes to see what occurs; Sandra then learns in Jamie that it obtained her own pub; she benefits from it to confront herself with the two boys. She ends up accepting their relation.

The film finishes with the two boys dancing on the place of the vicinity on traditional of Cass Elliot: Dream has Little Dream off Me , whereas Sandra dances with Leah at their side, while the neighbors look at them, some shocked, others benefitting from the moment.

  • July 28th, 1993 : Beautiful Thing is played for the first time Bush Theater, in London, with a setting in scene of Hettie McDonald. One found there the actors Patricia Kerrigan, Mark Letheren, Jonny Lee Miller, Sophie Stanton and Philip Glenister.

  • September 1994 : the part is played West End with the Duke off York' S Theater, with Amelda Brown, Zubin Varla, Richard Dormer, Diane Parish and Rhys Ifans.

  • May 16th, 1998 : First American was produced by the Famous Door Theater Company with Chicago, Illinois.

  • February 14th, 1999 : first in New York with the Cherry Lane Theater.

  • July-September 2006 : A representation of Beautiful Thing is played Sound Theater with London with Jonathan Bailey, Gavin Brocker, Steven Meo, Carli Norris and Michelle Terry.

  • September 2007 : A representation of Beautiful Thing will be played South London Theater.
