History

The territory of Beaulieu-sur-Mer is inhabited since the Préhistoire. A cave located in the district of Small Africa (destroyed today) delivered traces of occupation of the Paléolithique at the end of XIXe S. Of work to the site of the stores Giaume and Empress Hotel, the center town, allowed the setting the day of ceramics of the Neolithic at the same time Johston-Washing, eminent British vulcanologist being installed in the area.

One does not know a site of the age of iron on the territory of the commune, but of important traces of occupation of Roman epoch were discovered in the sector of the station and on the seaside, around the vault Notre-Dame d' Olivo or were put at the day more than one hundred of ancient burials to XIXe S. these last allow to think that an important ancient lane skirted the seaside to the height of Beaulieu. During construction of the parish church and destruction of the coastal battery, with a few meters of the vault Notre-Dame d' Olivo, Johston-Washing undertook excavations and put at the day an important ancient ceramics dump ranging between the end of Ier S. a. J. - C. and the Life S. a. J. - C. They seem to indicate the presence of a relatively important harbor station to Beaulieu during Antiquity. Its excavations in the district of the station enabled him to observe the remainders of rich person habitats of Roman epoch, who seem to belong to a small littoral agglomeration.

In the years 1950, colonel Cheneveau, president of the IPAAM, undertook excavations in the small garden contiguous to the Notre-Dame vault and put at the day a necropolis late Antiquité and Top Moyen-âge which, as opposed to what known as the local tradition, seems to show that the littoral is not abandoned at that time.

Many crowned heads and other celebrities affectionnent this winter station particularly.
