Bay of the Angels

The bay of the Angels is a bay the Mediterranean which does not extend from the town of Nice with its famous Promenade of the English (and Quai of the United States which prolongs it in the east) to the Cape d' Antibes.

Geographical location

For the Niçois the bay of the Anges extends:

  • With the is Cape of Nice - or Rauba-Capèu for other Niçois, which leaves the Port of Nice out of bay of the Angels.
  • With the western to the mouth of the VAr. For others the bay of the Angels extends to the west until the Cape d' Antibes. One thus notes the presence of a Marina Baie of the Angels to Villeneuve-Loubet.

Origin of the name

They are fishermen who gave his name to this bay. Indeed, they brought back in their nets to this place a kind of Requin inoffensive, alive on sea-beds and whose perpendicular ailerons resemble wings.

This shark is identified like the Ange of sea ocellé ( angel in Niçois): “ Squatina angelus Dum” alias “ Squatina oculata Bonaparte, 1840” for the scientists.

On the charts of the 19th century one sees mentioned a bridge of the Angels to the mouth of the Paillon. The future walk of the English was then called way of the English but also way of the Angels .

The writer of language Niçois E Francis Gag (1900 - 1988) was still the witness of a being renewed spectacle several times per annum: fishermen pushing a charreton on which one of these sharks lay (called read pei angel “angel fishes” by the writer) and preceding the procession, a pescairis (woman of fisherman) which shouted Venés, venés vèire the marrida bestiassa that destrugue read aret dòu paure pescadou! (Come, come to see the bad animal which destroys the nets of the poor fisherman!).

Simple nickname in the beginning what can explain the discussions relative to its limits, the case of the name of this bay is to be distinguished from names before very tourist such as Riviera or Beausoleil .

Legends

But that one reassures oneself: even in the popular accounts, Squatina angelus was never warned to go up the Paillon.

Many accounts and legends utilize Ange S of the sky in connection with this bay:

  • When the boat containing the body of Sainte Réparate reached the coasts niçoises and was brought back on the shore by angels one can suppose that it was on the level of Bay of the Angels.
  • Adam and Eve is a poem of Alexis de Jussieu published in 1856: the poet teach there us that Adam and Eve, after to be driven out terrestrial Paradis, was led on these edges by sympathizing angels since the beauties of this country almost made it equalize their lost paradise.

Environment of bay

With the mouth of the VAr (left bank) was built the Aéroport of Nice on a quay level gained on the sea; it is close to the airport that the purification plant of the waste water Haliotis was placed. The Paillon is thrown in bay of the Angels; its bed is covered in its course lower than Nice. The river of the small valley of Magnan of also throws in bay of the Angels, but it is often dry.
