the communes bordering of Baule-Escoublac are Pouliguen, Pornichet, Saint-Nazaire, Guérande and Saint-Andre-of-Water.
the city of Baule-Escoublac is divided into two districts: the district of Escoublac and the district of the Guézy.
Escoublac comes according to the legend from Breton the eskop-lec' H, place of the bishop or more probably of Latin Escob-acus, = field of Escobius, noble local of the Early empire. A Bôle indicates into Breton guérandais a marshy shore, covered at the time of the spring tides, comparable with the old salted meadows of the Mount Saint Michel. The dunes appeared since antiquity, they invaded the old coastal marshes, while progressing of West in Is, then at the end of the XVIIIe century, the old village of Escoublac. Ruins of the church are visible in the dunes.
Indeed, in 1050, the bishop of Nantes calls upon monks of the abbey of Saint-Florent-the-Veil to assist the population of Escoublac and to found a priory, with this clause: " that the nuns should provide with benefit four wire of the recteur" , which they never did. Under the episcopate of Quiriacus, an established charter with Chantenay, gone back to 1073, confirms this provision. The monks then build a small monastery placed under the term of Saint-Pierre and a church. From 1148 to 1184, Escoublac gives two successive bishops to Nantes: Bernard (bishop of 1148 to 1169) and his nephew Robert (bishop of 1170 to 1184).
When the first train connecting Saint-Nazaire to Croisic is coming in this May 11th, 1879, La Baule does not exist yet. " Bôle" , as it is named then, is at the time only one locality of the commune of Escoublac, a dune in the course of fixing by plantations of pines, paradise of wild rabbits. The borough of Escoublac is with three kilometers. Jules-Joseph Hennecart on the councils of his stockbroker Edouard Darlu became purchaser of the Company of the railroad of Saint-Nazaire in Croisic then in bankruptcy. He completes the construction of the line on behalf of the network of the State. This line will pass under the control of PO in 1883. Before the inauguration, Jules Joseph Hennecart buys forty hectares of dunes at the Company of the dunes of Escoublac of Yves Berthault. He entrusts his development to a young Nantes architect Georges Lafont. This last traces a sandy alley which will take the name of Avenue of the Station and which names today Avenue of the de Gaulle General. It also builds a vault which since 1981 is known under name of Vault Saint-Anne. The architect Georges Lafont will build more than two hundred and fifty villas and will thus take part in the development of the station.
In the years 1920, Louis Lajarrige gains a large success with its allotment of the Wood of Love with Baule the Pines. He gets along with the Company of PO to move the railway which is then installed in edge of beach and which gene the access to the sea bathings. July 17th, 1927, the new stations of the Baule-the-Pines and Baule-Escoublac are inaugurated. The old station then makes place with the public garden of the place of the Victories, the building of the station is always visible beside the bandstand.
The commune is called Escoublac until the decree of May 10th, 1962 and raised of the canton of Guérande until 1985; " Bôle" was then a simple locality on the coast, with the height of Escoublac. It is only on November 13rd, 1961, which the municipal council decides by twelve votes against ten for the name of Baule - Escoublac. The commune of Escoublac - La Baule is called the commune of Baule-Escoublac starting from May 15th, 1962. The station is named at the beginning " Escoublac it Bôle" then " Baule-Escoublac". In 1986, the ectrification of the railway until Croisic is carried out. From the September 24th, 1989, the Atlantic TGV puts less than three hours to connect La Baule to the capital.
Before the railroad, the area was already attended by " touristes" , its development as from 1879 was strongly accelerated.
The city is served by the train and has a station (Baule-Escoublac) and a stop (La Baule Pines).
Currently the station of Baule-Escoublac is served by FOR THE THIRD TIME, trains Corail and TGV, whereas the stop of the Baule-the-Pines is served only by FOR THE THIRD TIME.
The communal highway network is in a very average state, quasi-vacuum in hollow periods but completely saturated with peak periods (holidays).
It has many cycle tracks, some being of size unsuited to the circulation of only one bicycle, the other excellent ones.
The center of the city does not comprise any pedestrian precinct, contrary to the majority of the cities, and is of this fact in summer, saturated by the vehicles, noisy, and unpleasant for the holiday makers.
The sea front of Baule is incontestably the principal attraction of a city founded for the attraction of its beach. Bordered of villas, its aspect gradually changed as from the years 1960 when the seaside resort was popularized. The sea front nowadays consists of buildings of intermediate size dating from the years 1960 at our days.
