The battles of Villa da Praia was delivered the August 18th 1829 between the liberal fleet absolutist and forces, within the framework of the Portuguese Civil war (1828-1834).
The usurper Dom Miguel had decided to conquer the the Azores, faithful to the queen Maria II. For this purpose, a fleet of 22 ships was presented in front of Vila da Praia, capital of the island of Terceira, with an aim of seizing them and there of unloading troops. It ran up against the energetic defense of the liberals and was pushed back with heavy losses after one day of combat. This victory made it possible to the partisans of the queen to have a sure base, from which the armies would leave which would take again the Portugal in Miguelistes.
At the end of the war, the city was re-elected in Praia da Vitória.
