Battle of Verneuil

The battles of Verneuil was a battle of the Guerre One hundred Year old, which was held the August 17th 1424, close to Verneuil in Normandy. It showed a victory of the English army.

Context

Following the attack of Montereau, the September 10th 1419, the Burgundian ones were combined to the English what enabled them to plan to complete the conquest of the kingdom of France.

A partisan of the Dauphin had taken by surprised the castle of Ivry what involved in reaction an English seat. Besieged proposed to go the August 15th if no help reached them.

The army delphinale - composed of a strong Scottish detachment - joined together in Châteaudun, got under way to help them. The scouts having shown the too strong English position, the French decided to be diverted of Ivry.

It appeared convenient to them then to take the city close to Verneuil. Disguising the archers Scot as English archers, they occupied the city.

The Duke of Bedford, furious, went on Verneuil. After having parlementé, theScottish one agreed to fight battle rather than to undergo a seat. 11  000 French and some 7  000 Scot face 14  000 English.

Unfolding

After long hours of waiting and observation, the English archers decide to cause the French. However, the latter charge before the archers could fix themselves on their new positions, making steal in glares the English right wing.

At the same time, on the free-Scottish line, the archers Scot advance and engage a “formidable duel of archery”, 12  000  archers clashing during nearly three fifteen minutes. And more on the right, the Spanish mercenaries and lombards, circumventing this combat of archers, attack the English luggage. And this troop moves away with its spoils.

Rather than to protect its servants, the escort of the English luggage counter-attacks the French left wing victoriously.

The French beat a retreat while the English encircle the Scot and massacre them. The Constable of France John Stuart count de Buchan, his Robert younger brother, his father-in-law Douglas Archibald (4th count Douglas) and the son of this last James Douglas is killed.
